There are quite a few characters in the epic poem of "Beowulf". Some are which of: Beowulf, Grendel, Gredel's Mother, The Dragon, King Wrothgar, and Beowulf's Men. Here are some discriptions of who they are and why they are important to the story.

Beowulf is a great, strong, young warrior. He is the nephew of Higlac, king of the Geats. He kills Grendel, Grendel’s mother, a dragon, and then becomes the new king of the Geats. He is very boastful and does the favors for jewels and treasures instead of just for the people. In a way, he is also greedy.

                  Grendel

Grendel is a hideous monster who kills then eats people. He is unable to be beaten with weapons. Grendel does not enjoy the happiness from the people. Beowulf pulls his arm off, and then goes to his swamp lair to die. The arm was used as a trophy for the men and hung in the mead hall. His mother and father are said to be just as disgusting as he himself is. And, he has a claw-like talon.

This chick is supposed to be really ugly, like her son. Grendel’s mom lives in the swamp too. She takes revenge on Beowulf because he killed Grendel. The battle was easily almost tied, but after finding a magic sword, gets her head cut off, and dies. She has lots of treasures in her underwater cave.

            Dragon

The Dragon lives in his cave.  He has plenty of treasures surrounding him there. He lost some of his precious jewels and wreaked havoc on the village. Beowulf decided that even though he is older now, he will still try and defeat this monster. The dragon is big and not easily gotten rid of.

King Hrothgar is the king of the Danes. The king built Herot, a mead-hall, for his men because he wanted to reward them with something nice. He had sent for Beowulf to come and defeat Grendel because none of his men could do it. Hrothgar is the son to Healdane. He likes to pamper his men with parties. He expects a lot from Beowulf. King Hrothgar loved his men, and Beowulf’s 14 men too.
 King Hrothgar
There were 14 of them. The warriors were supposed to be there to help Beowulf whenever they were needed. In the battle against the dragon, however, they all ran besides one, Wiglaf. Wiglaf helped Beowulf in his hour of need, slain the dragon, and gathered the treasures for Beowulf. He also became the heir to the Geats.
